In medieval times, when an individual died who held land from the crown (ie they were a tenant-in-chief), an inquest was held to determine what land the individual held. The purpose was to ensure that the land passed to the rightful heir. The inquisitions record the name of the deceased, the heir and the type of tenure. They may also include an extent, which describes the land in more detail and they also often record the value of the holding. Frequently the land was held for some kind of military service, most commonly knight’s service or the knight’s fee. The tenant was required to supply a knight in armour with a horse and supporting men for 40 days service a year. This was rapidly changed to a monetary payment and as land was subdivided, individuals became responsible for a fraction of a knight’s fee.
From the mid 13th Century, most inquisitions have survived and are kept at the Public Record Office. Abstracts of most of these have been published by the Public Record Office and these have been used to compile a list of inquisitions relating to local manors (mainly within Stottesdon, Kinlet, Highley and Billingsley). Typically each entry records the volume of the book where the inquisition is described, the number of the inquisition, the name of the individual, the page number of the book and the date. The later is usually in the form of the regnal year; thus 16 April 2 Ed II refers to the second year of the reign of Edward II (1308). A number of regnal year calculators are available on the web and can readily be located by using a search engine. in a few cases, more complete summaries have been provided from the original documents. However, it should be noted that these are often faded and hard to read and so the extended summaries should be used with particular care.
The current list is not complete; this is work in progress.
