This mangle was made for W.J.Jones and Co. from Bridgnorth.
Having washed the clothes using a 'dolly' tub and a dolly, they then had to be squeezed out to get rid of the excess water. Victorian families up and down the country used mangles to do this job. It was a hot and difficult job to lift the heavy clothes out of the wash tub and feed them through the mangle's rollers. More effort was then required to turn the handle and squeeze the clothes through the rollers. There was a skill in getting just the right pressure on the mangle for the type and volume of material, and also in doing some preliminary folding that helped to save ironing later.
