Advice for your educational visit to Llanymynech Heritage Area
• This trail has been developed in conjunction with the Llanymynech Heritage Project. It is intended to be a pupil resource to accompany a guided walk of the site. It would be very appropriate for Key Stage 2 pupils studying QCA unit 12 “How did life change in our locality in Victorian times?” especially section 4 “What evidence of Victorian times remains in our area?” and section 5 “How did life change in our locality in Victorian times?” Alternatively this resource would support most of QCA unit 18 “What was it like to live here in the past?” as also recommended by QCA for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils.
• The trail focuses on answering these questions:
a) Why did a Lime industry grow up at Llanymynech?
b) What was life like for workers in the lime industry?
c) What should the site be like in the future?
This approach of posing key questions is in line with the draft QCA programme of study for KS2 History. By the time you have finished your tour of Llanymynech Lime Kiln Heritage area pupils should have their own answers to these questions.
• You can find a great deal of related information on Llanymynech in the rest of this site. It is well worth familiarising yourself with this content before organising your trip in order to make the best use of your time on the site.
• We have tried to avoid the trail becoming a lengthy meander with the teacher or guide merely presenting pupils with information. Instead the trail is concentrated on a few key sites. At each site pupils are presented with active and focused learning exercises.
• Each site is spacious enough to accommodate a class of pupils (although normal safety advice will still need to be given, and close supervision of pupils remains essential at Llanymynech as on any outdoor site).
• As a rough guide the trail should take 3 - 4 hours to complete, but it is not anticipated that you would try to cover all the sites on the trail. You can of course adapt it to suit your own needs and interests and some of the tasks would also be suitable as school-based exercises. Some of the sites would be suitable to pause at for a picnic lunch.
• Llanymynech is one of the most interesting industrial sites in the country. It is our hope that this trail, combined with other resources provided on this web-site, will enable teachers and pupils to make the best use of Llanymynech as a fascinating resource.
