William Penny Brookes and the inns of Much Wenlock
In January 1880 William Penny Brookes made a list of inns that existed, or had recently existed in Much Wenlock. At one time there were no less than thirty establishments selling liquor - this in a town of only a couple of thousand people!
Penny Brookes was determined to provide alternatives to the inns for local people and most famous of these was the recreation of the Olympian games in the town that were to prove such an influence on the modern Olympian movement.
